Student scholarships are essential to making an education in health care accessible — whether students are pursuing a degree in medicine, pharmacy or public health. They also are critical to our ability to attract and retain a student community that is talented, empathetic, forward-thinking and representative of California’s diversity.
In September 2023, John Carethers, MD, vice chancellor of UC San Diego Health Sciences, announced a commitment of $12 million dollars from Chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla for scholarships at the School of Medicine, Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, and Herbert Wertheim School of Public Health and Human Longevity Science. Together, Chancellor Khosla and Vice Chancellor Carethers are challenging our philanthropic community to raise an additional $12 million over the next four years, effectively doubling the impact for our students.

Other Giving Opportunities
Endowed Scholarships: $250,000 minimum
The permanent and sustained nature of endowed gifts make them uniquely powerful by benefiting students now and in the future. The principal is invested to grow in perpetuity and the payout is designed to provide predictable annual allocations to beneficiaries. Outright gifts and pledges, made over five years or less, to establish new endowed scholarships at the gift minimum of $250,000, as well as gifts to existing endowments at any size, can be applied to the challenge.
Named Current Use Fund: $100,000 minimum
A $100,000 named scholarship supports one student over four years and allows us to be competitive in recruiting the best and the brightest. Your support will create a new named current use fund that will reduce the burden of debt and remove barriers to a health professions education for a student. Current use gifts offer expendable, immediate resources.
