Henry E. Allison Endowed Chair in the History of Philosophy
Henry Allison is a UC San Diego professor emeritus and former chair of the philosophy department. A renowned scholar of philosophy, Allison is known for his specialization in Kant, Spinoza, German idealism and eighteenth and nineteenth century philosophy. The Allison Chair is a reflection of his commitment to advancing knowledge in the field—and to the university—and will help to ensure the excellence of the philosophy department by recruiting outstanding faculty members.

The chair honors Richard C. Atkinson, the 17th president of the University of California and former chancellor of UC San Diego. Dan Broida Chair in Elementary Particle Physics
Established by Dan Broida’s son, Joel Broida, the chair supports a faculty member of the department of physics with a research focus in elementary particle physics, or other field of study, to further benefit the department. Dan Broida is known for his leadership at Sigma Chemical Company, a Midwest consultant subsidiary that manufactured saccharin during the war-time rationing of sugar. He successfully redirected Sigma to manufacture specialty biochemicals for scientific research, merging with Aldrich Chemical Company in 1975 to form Sigma-Aldrich. Broida’s son, Joel, is a faculty member in the department of physics at UC San Diego.

Paul Erdos Chair of Combinatorics formerly known as the Akamai Chair of Internet Mathematics
Dr. Paul Erdos was a Hungarian mathematician. Erdos published more papers than any other mathematician in history, working with hundreds of collaborators. He worked on problems in combinatorics, graph theory, number theory, classical analysis, approximation theory, set theory, and probability theory. He is also known for his "legendarily eccentric" personality. Funded by UC San Diego professor Ronald Graham, the Erdos Chair was established to enhance research surrounding Internet computing and the translation of mathematics to practical real world applications. Graham is one of the world’s best-known mathematicians, computer theorists and technology visionaries. He pioneered worst-case analysis in scheduling theory, online algorithms, quasi-randomness and Ramsey Theory—a branch of pure math that states that complete disorder is impossible.

Established by an anonymous donor, the Grandier Chair supports the study, research and teaching of medieval European history. The named chair honors Frank Caylus Grandier. Born in Switzerland and educated in Paris, Grandier immigrated to the United States in 1880 and served as French Consul in San Diego until after World War I. He was also involved in the newspaper business as owner of the San Diego Herald and The Daily Transcript, which he later merged to become the Transcript.

Sir Clive W.J. Granger Endowed Chair in Econometrics
The endowment honors UC San Diego Professor Emeritus Sir Clive W. J. Granger, one of the world’s leading economists. He was a 2003 co-recipient of the Nobel Prize in Economics, and was inducted in to the Order of Knight Batchelor by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II of England in 2004.
Granger came to UC San Diego in 1974 where he built up the econometrics group, now a world-renowned powerhouse that has consistently ranked among the top in the nation. Sokwanlok Chair in Chinese International Affairs
The chair was established to provide funding to a faculty member in the field of international affairs who also possesses Chinese language skills and expertise on the role of China and/or Chinese people in international affairs and/or contemporary China. Kwan So is president of EVG Enterprises, Inc., a real estate investment firm. The Sos came to the university in 1990 with a desire to give back in appreciation of the success they found in the United States.

Ronald R. Taylor Chair in Information Technology in Computer Science
The chair was established for a faculty member in the Jacobs School of Engineering with an emphasis in database and information management with particular application in the health care industry. Ronald Taylor, a resident of La Jolla, was an executive and vice president of Hybritech, Inc., the first commercially successful biotechnology company. Taylor was also one of the founders of the Pyxis Corporation, providing technology that transformed the pharmaceutical industry.

Jack Keil Wolf Endowed Chair in Electrical Engineering
The endowed chair was established by friends and colleagues to honor the late Dr. Jack Wolf. Wolf was actively engaged with UC San Diego Jacobs School of Engineering for more than 27 years. He was a pioneer in information theory and its applications and made profound contributions to digital communications and data storage. In 1993, Wolf was inducted into the National Academy of Engineering.

Herman Wouk Chair of Modern Jewish Studies
The Wouk Chair was established by the Judaic Studies Board of Visitors and community members to provide academic support for the study, research and teaching of the post-enlightenment period of Jewish civilization. A renowned author, Herman Wouk is known for his fictional accounts of World War II, including the Pulitzer Prize winning The Caine Mutiny and The Winds of War. Embracing his own Orthodox Judaism, Wouk later captured the compelling story of a young Jewish woman in the popular Marjorie Morningstar (1955).

Walter J. Zable Chair in Engineering
The Zable Chair was established to support faculty recruitment, teaching and research activities at the Jacobs School of Engineering. Walter Zable founded Cubic Corporation in 1951, which today is the parent company of two major segments: transportation and defense. Zable has been actively involved at UC San Diego, including as a past president of the Chancellor’s Associates and with the UC San Diego Foundation board of trustees.
