Why should I give to UC San Diego?
The reasons for making a gift are very personal to each donor, and UC San Diego offers a vast array of funding opportunities to meet the personal goals of our donors. Perhaps working with students through the years makes you want to help provide scholarship or fellowship opportunities. Maybe your academic department needs private funding for unique programs and activities that you feel are important to support. Or a specific area of medical research might be particularly meaningful for you and your family. For many donors, knowing that their gift can be doubled thanks to matching gifts is a powerful incentive to give to the campus at this time.
How much should I donate?
Every gift, no matter the amount, is important to the future of this campus. Your participation in the campaign and belief in the people and programs at UC San Diego is what this initiative is all about. And there are matching gifts that can double your gift amount, thereby doubling the impact of your donation. Some payment options have low minimum gift amounts due to costs associated with processing gifts.
Can I specify how my contribution is used?
Yes, as the donor you specify how the gift will be used. Whether you choose to support people—students, staff, faculty—or contribute funds toward academic or research programs, your donation can help ensure a successful future for UC San Diego. Donors may select from a variety of funds that support people and programs across the entire campus.
Some funding opportunities that appeal to many members of our faculty and staff include the UCSD Faculty–Staff Undergraduate Scholarship Endowment which supports promising students who are daughters and sons of university employees, and the Staff Development Fund which provides much needed resources for conferences and other career training opportunities. Some donors decide to make unrestricted gifts, giving the Chancellor and other campus leaders the opportunity to utilize the funds for an area of high need. For a full list of funds to which you can designate your gift, please visit our online giving page.

What if my spouse/partner works for a company with a matching gifts program?
Your gift may double or even triple if your spouse or partner's company has a matching gifts program. Please ask your spouse or partner to check with his or her human resources department for program specifics and paperwork. You can also visit our Employer Matching Gifts Program page to find out more about matching gifts and search for a list of employers with gift matching programs.
Are there fees associated with contributions?
The university assesses a four percent fee on donations to support external relations programs designed to further the university's base of support. This is among the lowest rate for any UC campus and is well below the amounts assessed on donations by many nonprofits for administration.
Is my gift tax deductible?
Your gift qualifies for tax-deduction in accordance with IRS regulations during the calendar year that you make your gift. You will receive a gift receipt for your files. Consult your tax professional for information.
