Supporting the Best and Brightest: Student Scholarships and Fellowships
By designating gifts for student support, donors give deserving young adults the chance to pursue their aspirations and dreams.
How Parents Can Enhance Their Student’s Education
“To educate our students properly, we must rely on the generosity of UC San Diego parents,” notes Steven Adler, Warren College Provost.
With higher education’s share of state revenue declining each year (only 12 percent of UC San Diego’s total budget is from the State of California), many families choose to support the Parents Fund as a way to enhance students’ educational experiences. Gifts of any size to the Parents Fund help maintain and strengthen UC San Diego’s Student Affairs programs, and also offer a pool of flexible dollars to each of the university’s six colleges to provide essential complements to classroom instruction.
Research Scholarships Provide Eureka! Moments for Undergraduates
Francis Hwee bounded into the room waving a flask filled with emerald green cyanobacteria. Rather than spending his time at a summer job in Oakland, the undergraduate student remained in San Diego this past June, trying to coax microorganisms into making precursors of drugs that could fight malaria or cancer.
Hwee is one of four undergraduate students who received scholarship awards, thanks to the Division of Biological Science's new Eureka! Program. As part of the novel initiative, talented students—who might otherwise have to take low-paying jobs unrelated to their studies—are assisted with educational and living expenses while they spend extracurricular time in the lab, conducting valuable research alongside some of UC San Diego's leading scientists.
