UC San Diego Attracts, Cultivates and Produces Innovation

On a campus teeming with intellect, creativity and purpose, philanthropic support converts these essential ingredients into the milestones that have catapulted UC San Diego into the ranks of the nation's premier research universities.

Bequest Funds Campus Program for Mature Learners
A $500,000 bequest from the trust of Marcella B. Coolidge, the daughter of artist C.M. Coolidge who painted the famous dogs playing poker scenes, will support lifelong learning for mature adults at UC San Diego Extension’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute. The gift will help fund lecture programs and capital improvements at the continuing education program designed for those over 50 who enjoy thought-provoking learning opportunities in a university setting.

“This bequest demonstrates the late Marcella Coolidge’s appreciation of the wide array of intellectually stimulating, learning opportunities that we offer for mature learners,” said Mary Walshok, associate vice chancellor for public programs and dean of Extension.

IR/PS: Helping the Region Play a Broader Role in International Policy
The Graduate School of International Relations and Pacific Studies (IR/PS) is significantly enhancing San Diego's engagement in world affairs through the establishment of the Center on Pacific Economies. Funded by private support, the center brings leaders from throughout the Pacific region through its Pacific Leadership Fellows program.

Dean Peter F. Cowhey notes, "This gift enables IR/PS to be the catalyst in launching and maintaining a network of leaders to focus on major challenges of the Pacific region of the Americas and Asia."

Fellows have included Shuli Hu, founding editor of Chinese business magazine, Caijing; Ambassador Sergio Ley, former Mexican ambassador to China; and Mario Arana, Ph.D., former president of the Central Bank of Nicaragua.
