For nearly 500 years, the world’s great universities have attracted and supported distinguished educators by endowing academic chairs.  At UCSD, endowed chairs are teaching/research positions occupied by distinguished scholars.  Although state funds provide basic faculty salaries, permanent endowed funds created by philanthropic gifts support chair-holders’ teaching and research.

Since the Campaign for UCSD was launched in July 2000, generous donors have established more than 35 endowed faculty chairs – impressive, but not enough to keep UCSD competitive.  The establishment of an endowed chair supports UCSD’s faculty excellence by helping to attract and retain Nobel Laureates, Pulitzer Prize winners and innovators of all kinds.  Your endowment creates a perpetual fund that provides an annual income to support exceptional faculty members. You can designate your chair and professorship to specific divisions or departments.

An outstanding faculty is the hallmark of any great university.  The more endowed faculty chairs we establish, the more successful UCSD will be in ensuring the quality of our overall academic reputation.
