Since 2000, over 3,100 current and former faculty and staff members have contributed more than $14.9 million to the university through individual gifts, trusts, family foundations and gifts directed by faculty and staff to UC San Diego through other organizations. Hear from some of these generous donors:
Darcy Bingham
Former Staff Member, Department of Recreation
"Because I believe UCSD is a tremendous resource for both our students and the general community, it was my sincere pleasure to help launch this effort and to engage the people who make this institution so great."
|
John Valva
Former Executive Director, UCSD Alumni Association
"Our goal for the Patricia Ordonez Valva ’92 Memorial Scholarship Endowment was to establish scholarship in Trish’s memory at her beloved alma mater. The endowment is to help academically successful UCSD students who have significant financial need, and have either lost a parent or are experiencing cancer in their immediate family."
|
Ernie Mort
Staff Emeritus and Retired Dean, Revelle College
"I feel very fortunate to have been involved in Revelle College for so long, and believe it’s important to offer something back. I would encourage more staff members to contribute to the university." |
Lea Rudee
Faculty, Jacobs School of Engineering
"I support many areas on campus - including the Jacobs School, the libraries, cancer research and the Stuart Collection - because I find being at UCSD so enriching and stimulating. This is a special campus and I am thrilled to help contribute both in my work and in my philanthropy."
|
Peter Gourevitch
Founding Dean and Faculty Member, UCSD's Graduate School of International Relations and Pacific Studies, Professor of Political Science, Division of Social Sciences
"Students teach us all so much. Helping bright people go to school is very meaningful, so I contribute to the Preuss School and to UCSD scholarship funds." |
Irma Martinez Velasco
Director of Campus Relations in the Chancellor's Office
"Student support is very important to me. When I went to college, if it weren’t for my scholarship and other financial aid, I wouldn’t have been able to attend. At UC San Diego, there are a lot of students in need. Payroll deduction is great way for faculty and staff to contribute. Whatever you give, as a whole, adds up. And it could make the difference between a student going UCSD, or not going to a university at all."
|
 Bob Starkey
Retired Staff Member and Trustee for the Gerard A. Sasek Trust
"People don’t typically think that Theatre, or most of the arts, needs funding. But for graduate students, it’s difficult to work outside. By endowing a fellowship fund through his bequest, Gerard Sasek wanted to provide a better chance to recruit terrific graduate students, which in turn, makes the department better. He loved UCSD, and he loved the things he could do to improve the quality here.” Gerard Sasek worked at UCSD for nearly 25 years, and served as the Associate Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs. |
Stephen Miller
Faculty, Scripps Institution of Oceanography
"I have chosen to support Scripps, especially in this difficult era for research, as we struggle to maintain a steady course in the face of fluctuations in state and federal funding. Other institutions have been successful in cultivating a strong support network from private staff and community donations to augment funding, and it’s our turn now if we want to hold our position of leadership." |
Lourdes Felix, '78
Staff, School of Medicine
"UCSD - my alma mater and employer - is such an incredibly important part of my life. I believe in UCSD, and I know that my donations are helping make a better university for today's undergraduates and our future students." |
