To continue the university’s achievements and contributions, UC San Diego must increasingly rely on private contributions. Learn what motivates these generous donors.

Alumni

Jim Kaplan, an alumnus and enthusiastic supporter of UCSD, wants to encourage young alumni to support their alma mater.

A member of the Rady School of Management’s inaugural class, Jan Tuttleman, M.B.A. ’06, Ph.D., feels a deep connection with UC San Diego.

Parents

Paul Volberding and his wife Molly Cooke appreciate the stellar education that UC San Diego offered their children. “We are honored to be able to give back.”

Gigi and Shale Imeson, along with other committed parents of student-athletes, are helping to upgrade the Triton baseball facilities.

 

Friends

The late Robert Anthony Buzzelli— great-grandson of E.W. Scripps—was passionate about helping people who were struggling. His $100,000 bequest will help support first-year graduate students.

In October, the Gorder family and event supporters reached the $1 million cumulative fundraising mark for the annual Bruce Gorder UCSD 5K Walk for Melanoma.

Faculty

Former faculty member Cecil Lytle presents annual piano concerts to benefit the Rebecca E. Lytle Memorial Scholarship Fund to support students enrolled in UCSD’s Marshall College.

“If science and engineering are the head of our society, then the arts are the heart and soul,” notes Arthur Wagner, founder of UCSD’s Theatre and Dance Department.

Staff

Staff member Irma Martinez Velasco notes, "Payroll deduction is great way for faculty and staff to contribute. Whatever you give, as a whole, adds up."

Ernie Mort, staff emeritus and retired dean of Revelle College, offers, "I would encourage more staff members to contribute to the university."

Students

Stephanie Ursy's involvement in the Student Foundation taught her the importance of giving back.

"I've learned that even a small positive change is nonetheless a change for the better."

Corporations

The UC San Diego Student-Run Free Clinic Project received a generous gift from the Clark CARES Foundation to help the clinic serve the community’s underserved.

“With industry leadership comes many opportunities and responsibilities to have a positive impact on our communities,” said Paul Jacobs, QUALCOMM chief executive officer.

Foundations

The local ARCS Foundation has given UC San Diego students studying the natural sciences, medicine and engineering $3,150,000 since the chapter’s inception in 1985.

The Bernard Osher Foundation has awarded UCSD Extension a $1 million endowment gift to support lifelong learning for those who are at least 50 years of age
