Meeting Campus and Community Demand for UCSD Libraries
UCSD has established the Audrey Geisel University Librarianship, the first university position of its kind in San Diego County. Discretionary funding provided by the gift will benefit the campus and the community by supporting initiatives ranging from the development of new collections and cultivation of rare scholarly materials, to better retention of stellar staff members and creation of additional facilities for students, faculty and friends to enjoy.
“This generous gift will allow for unparalleled opportunities to secure valuable scholarly research materials for use by students, artists, scientists, educators and the community at large,” said the inaugural holder of the Librarianship, UCSD’s chief librarian, Brian E. C. Schottlaender.
IR/PS: Helping the Region Play a Broader Role in International Policy
The School of International Relations and Pacific Studies (IR/PS) is significantly enhancing San Diego’s engagement in world affairs through the establishment of the Center on Pacific Economies. Funded by private support, the center brings leaders from throughout the Pacific region through its Pacific Leadership Fellows program.
Dean Peter F. Cowhey notes, “This gift enables IR/PS to be the catalyst in launching and maintaining a network of leaders to focus on major challenges of the Pacific region of the Americas and Asia.”
Fellows have included Shuli Hu, founding editor of Chinese business magazine, Caijing; Ambassador Sergio Ley, former Mexican ambassador to China; and Mario Arana, Ph.D., former president of the Central Bank of Nicaragua. |
