Faculty support, such as endowed chairs, help UC San Diego stay competitive in attracting and retaining distinguished scholars, Nobel Laureates, Pulitzer Prize recipients, academic leaders and innovators of all kinds.

Mentoring Young Faculty at UC San Diego
Young professors who are in the early stages of their careers offer an exciting area of donor support at UC San Diego. Even modest gifts can help further their work and attract larger grants. Case in point: Assistant Professor of Biological Sciences, Gentry Patrick, Ph.D.

“Private funding is critical in supporting the experiments that are required before I can apply for major federal grants,” said Patrick. Through gifts, he can add more graduate students and postdoctoral fellows studying an important molecular pathway that controls protein turnover in mammalian cells.

Patrick received the Ray Thomas Edwards Career Development Award in the Biomedical Sciences, the Division’s first recipient of this prestigious honor.

San Diego’s Greek Community Supports History Department's Ambition to be Nation’s Best
Philosophy professor Georgios Anagnostopoulos’ dream of UC San Diego becoming the nation’s leader in Greek studies is now a reality.

Through fundraising efforts, the campus created the Gerry and Jeannie Ranglas Chair in Ancient Greek History and the Alkiviadis Vassiliadis Chair in Byzantine Greek History with $1 million in donations. Funding was recently completed for a Modern Greek History chair, making the campus one of the only American universities to have faculty chairs for all three major eras of Greek history.

“The active and very generous Greek community in San Diego provided UCSD powerful tools to attract and retain distinguished faculty in Greek History,” said Anagnostopoulos.
