To continue the university’s achievements and contributions, UC San Diego must increasingly rely on private contributions. Learn what motivates these generous donors.
Alumni
Each year, a select number of transfer students receive support from a scholarship endowed by Sheldon Engelhorn, ’72, and his wife Susan.
Tony Jackson, '74, paid his way through his undergraduate years at UCSD, and as a medical student at UC Irvine. "I know how difficult it is," he says.
Parents
Pleasurable moments along the spectrum of parenting include the recognition of family and philanthropic values in the words and actions of an adult child.
Gigi and Shale Imeson, along with other committed parents of student-athletes, are helping to upgrade the Triton baseball facilities.
Friends
The Conrad Prebys Music Center, named after local philanthropist Conrad Prebys, will be more than a building—it will be a new frontier in music.
As a physicist, Russell Duff worked for UC-managed facilities for 15 years.
Faculty
Peter Gourevitch notes, "Helping bright people go to school is very meaningful, so I contribute to the Preuss School and to UCSD scholarship funds."
This is a special campus and I am thrilled to help contribute both in my work and in my philanthropy," said faculty member Lea Rudee.
Staff
"When an organization provides a service that benefits your life, it behooves you to give back when and however you can," said former staff member Judy Moore.
Ernie Mort, staff emeritus and retired dean of Revelle College, offers, "I would encourage more staff members to contribute to the university."
Students
The Student Foundation has helped Sarah Chang solidify her passion for philanthropy and opened her eyes to the joys of giving back.
"I've learned that even a small positive change is nonetheless a change for the better."
Corporations

Foundations
A grant of nearly $2 million from the Larry L. Hillblom Foundation will help researchers better understand the process of aging.
The Conrad N. Hilton Foundation will help support Feeling the Heat: The Climate Challenge at Birch Aquarium at Scripps Institution of Oceanography.
